If you have won a vehicle where the V5 is available, you can now speed up switching ownership of the vehicle you’ve won!
With our V5 process, you will receive the V5 reference number via email, as soon as the vehicle has left our Operation Centre.
How do I know if the V5 is available?
| V5 Available? | What does this mean? |
| V5 REFERENCE ONLY | Copart holds a record of the V5 document reference number, but not the physical document. The reference number can be used to complete a change of ownership with the DVLA to obtain a new V5 document. |
| PHYSICAL V5 AVAILABLE | Copart holds the full physical V5 document. |
| PARTIAL V5 AVAILABLE | Copart holds only the “New Keeper Supplement” portion of the V5 document. This contains the reference number which can be used to complete a change of ownership with the DVLA to obtain a new V5 document. |
| NO | Copart has not received a V5 document for this vehicle. |
When do I receive the V5?
Paper copy
If we have a paper copy of the V5 and you are collecting your vehicle, this will be in the vehicle that you are collecting and can be found on the driver’s seat or in the glove box.
If you believe there should be a V5 but cannot find it in the vehicle, please speak to the Gate Marshall or loader driver.
Please ensure you always check before you leave site to avoid delays in receipt of the V5 information.
If we have a paper copy of the V5 and you are having your vehicle delivered, this will be given to you by your delivery driver.
What do I do next?
Upon receiving your vehicle, it is your legal responsibility to make sure it is registered with the correct details.
Where a physical copy of the V5 or V5 number is available, Copart will transfer this into trade via the DVLA, therefore you do not need to transfer the vehicle ownership until the vehicle is ready to go back on the road.
You must transfer ownership of the vehicle once:
- You sell it to someone, where you must transfer it into the new owner’s name
- You decide to use the vehicle yourself, where you must transfer into your own name.
Please be aware, you are liable for changing the ownership of the vehicle when it has either been sold to someone or you drive it. You must not drive the vehicle on the road, without trade plates, unless you have transferred the ownership. If you were to do this, you would be at risk of up to a £1,000 fine from the DVLA.
